French President Emmanuel Macron Awarded Olympic Order in Gold for Contributions to Paris 2024

In a ceremony held at the Élysée Palace on August 28, 2024, French President Emmanuel Macron was honored with the Olympic Order in gold by International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach. This prestigious award recognizes Macron's unwavering commitment and visionary leadership, which played a crucial role in making the Paris 2024 Olympic Games an extraordinary and unifying event.

The Olympic Order in gold, one of the highest honors given by the IOC, was bestowed upon Macron in recognition of his relentless support for the Paris 2024 Games and his deep connection to the Olympic ideals articulated by Pierre de Coubertin. The accolade acknowledges his exceptional engagement, which helped transform the Paris Games into a landmark occasion symbolizing global unity.

When Macron assumed office in 2017, he threw his full support behind Paris's bid to host the 2024 Games. During his inaugural visit to the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, he not only expressed his enthusiasm but also showcased his profound understanding of and unique vision for the Olympic project. Macron saw the potential of the Games to unite France and inspire the world, a perspective that resonated deeply with the IOC.

Reflecting on their first meeting, IOC President Thomas Bach noted, "The first time we met, it was very quickly clear to me that President Emmanuel Macron was bringing a particular energy and vision to this project. He did not just support the candidature; he embraced it wholeheartedly."

Bach highlighted Macron’s comprehensive grasp of the project’s details and his belief in the Games as a unifying force. “He knew every detail of the project and always saw the Olympic Games Paris 2024 as a unifying project, using the power of sport to bring the people of France together, and in so doing, uniting the whole world,” Bach said.

Despite the inherent political challenges and risks associated with hosting such a massive event, Macron’s leadership was instrumental in fostering collaboration among public authorities across various political backgrounds. His efforts created a rare political unity around the Paris Games, which was crucial for their successful execution.

“You were the driving force which brought together the public authorities at every level and from every political background around this Olympic project,” Bach asserted during the ceremony. “Your tireless energy and the unifying power of sport produced a truly magical occasion.”

A standout achievement of Macron’s tenure was the organization of the Olympic Games’ Opening Ceremony. Under his leadership, an IOC-proposed idea was transformed into a breathtaking reality. The ceremony took place along the River Seine, featuring Paris’s iconic landmarks such as Notre-Dame, the Eiffel Tower, and the Louvre. This unprecedented event captured global attention and became a powerful symbol of unity and peace.

“Your unfailing commitment and attention to detail bore fantastic fruit,” Bach remarked. “The world witnessed a historic Olympic event with a truly spectacular Opening Ceremony.”

In addition to his contributions to the Games' organization, Macron was a staunch supporter of the Olympic mission of peace. During a period when the IOC faced significant scrutiny and threats of boycotts related to athlete inclusivity, Macron's steadfast support was vital. Bach praised Macron’s respect for the Olympic values, noting, “Your approach based on always respecting the peace mission of the Olympic Games greatly contributed to enabling us to bring together athletes from all 206 National Olympic Committees and the IOC Refugee Olympic Team.”

In his acceptance speech, Macron expressed gratitude for the honor, stating, “You are doing me a great honour by presenting me with this Order, and recognition which goes to France.  Together, we made a wonderful success of these Games. Thank you for this honour. Your words about the organisation of the Olympic Games are not for one person, but for the commitment of a whole nation.  It was a human collective that was involved for seven years. But it got involved first because of your trust in us.”

Macron’s acknowledgment underscored the collaborative effort behind the success of the Paris 2024 Games and the vital role of trust and cooperation between the IOC and French authorities.
